Are you a speech language pathologist looking for conversational prompts for your learners? Although we all might pick topics off the top of our heads for conversation, its hard to think of more than a few topics at a time. Because of this, I’m offering 15 Quick and Easy Conversation Prompts for Speech Therapy.

What is a conversation prompt for speech therapy?

Conversation prompts are perfect for learners practicing a task at the structured or unstructured level. I use conversational prompts for a variety of learners working on skills at the structured/unstructured level:

  • using fluency strategies

  • social learners using nonverbal behaviors

  • articulation students generalizing sounds

  • language students who need to practice using their skills (for example: verbs, conjunctions)

Conversation Prompts: About School

1. What is a librarian, and what do they do during their workday? Describe to me in detail their tasks and where they work, and what that place is like.

2. Who is your principal? Where does a principal work and what does a principal do all day? What do you think your principal does when he/she isn’t working?

3. Do you think teachers should assign homework? Why or why not?

4. Should school be year round (including summers)? Why or why not?

5. If you were a teacher, what subject would you teach? Would you be a good teacher? What makes a good teacher? In your classroom, what types of activities would you do? Would you give tests?

Conversation Prompts: About Me

6. If you could do anything to celebrate your birthday, what would you do? Where would you go? What kind of cake or food would you have? Who would be there?

7. What should kids do if they feel like they are being bullied? What’s an example of bullying? How can other kids help out when a student is being bullied, and how can school staff help? Have you ever seen anyone be bullied? What happened?

8. You can eat whatever you want for dinner and dessert tonight. What would you eat? Who would make it? Would you share with your family? Don’t forget to share what you would have to drink, and if you’d have dessert!

9. If you could travel and explore space, or explore underwater areas which would you choose? What would you see, and what might you discover while there? While underwater, what would be the coolest thing you think you might be able to find?

10. What is a book or movie you like? Tell me about it (characters, setting, what happens, etc.)

Conversation Prompts: Would You Rather _______

11. Be able to fly or read other people’s minds? What would you do with your powers? Why did you pick that power?

12. Own a pet snake or a pet turtle? Why? Would you rather have a dog or a cat? Why? What do you think makes a good pet owner? Who shouldn’t own pets/what makes a bad pet owner?

13. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Would you get tired of it? What do you think your family would choose if they could only choose one?

14. Have a blue tongue or purple feet for the rest of your life? Why would you make that choice?

15. Run for 10 miles or hop on one foot for one mile? Which do you think would be easier/more difficult and why?
